Powerlifting and the BPO - A Brief History
Many powerlifters became disillusioned in the late `1980’s with way Powerlifting was being run in particular, that powerlifters were not being rewarded as they deserved. Also at that time, Powerlifting, financially, came second to weightlifting, considering that GB powerlifters were much more successful than weight lifters in international competition. In 1989 Kieran Stanley formed the BPF with the support of some top powerlifters, membership grew, participation evolved with coverage by TV. By 1993 the usual divisions were prevailing in the BPF, so overtures were made to Brian Smith and David Carter to reform British Powerlifting on firm basis of commitment and integrity. After 1994 a strong European base of powerlifters had formulated the European Powerlifting Congress with ten countries including the BPO became affiliated. Further disagreements resulted and by 1997 those involved set up a breakaway organisation remaining affiliated to the WPC. Concerns at this time revolved around the credibility of lifting apparel, i.e. Canvas and multiple ply lifting suits, which the BPO are diametrically opposed to.
Carl Smith from Austria went forward building, with a small handful of dedicated people, the World Powerlifting Federation (WPF) in 1999, to which the BPO is affiliated.
The BPO have rode mighty storms of turbulence within the Powerlifting fraternity, but operate with people who take action to develop Powerlifting unlike the talkers who do nothing.
This attitude has created greater opportunity for athletes in the Powerlifting fraternity.
